A vegetable farmer in Telangana's Mahabubabad district was left in shock after seeing his hard-earned money worth Rs 2 lakh being shredded by the rats.

A farmer in Mahabubabad district in Telangana has claimed that rats nibbled on his currency notes worth Rs 2 lakh, which were kept inside a bag at his house.

Redya Naik, a resident of Indiranagar Thanda in Vemunur village, had kept the money in his cupboard, The Times of India reported.

He had saved the money for his abdominal surgery and had borrowed some of the shredded cash from his relatives. All the currency notes were in the denomination of Rs 500.

"It was all my savings after selling vegetables. I had tucked the cash in a cotton bag. When I opened the bag, I was shocked to see that all the Rs 500 currency notes were damaged by the cats," Naik was quoted as saying by TOI.

Naik, who earns a living by selling vegetables on his two wheeler, even approached several banks in Mahabubabad to exchange the notes, but the bank officials refused.

The bank advised the vegetable vendor to approach the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) in Hyderabad and explain his problem.
